Doris Norman Bio

Doris is a skilled artisan and instructor who teaches rug-hooking courses and workshops across the United States and Canada. She is an accredited Nova Scotia and Pearl McGown teacher, specializing in Celtic Art, William Morris, Jacobean, Pictorial, Stained Glass, Primitive Fruit and Shading. Her work has been featured in Canadian Living Magazine, Rug Hooking Magazine and is included in the Beaverbrook Art Gallery’s Permanent collection as well as many private collections. Doris has taught at Nova Scotia schools for many years as well as the Prairie Harvest school, Newfoundland and Labrador school, Hooked in the Mountains, and Friends by the Sea in Oregon.

A Designer of all Things Beautiful: William Morris

About the Course
William Morris: a leader in the arts and crafts movement in the late eighteen hundreds, Morris searched for honest design and traditional craftsmanship. He was inspired by natural forms; flowers, birds, leaves as well a medieval tapestries and stained glass. The floral repeat designs are found in rugs, carpets, tapestries, wall papers and soft furnishings. Generally he used five values of colour or less in the flowers and leaves. Students may create a design based on Morris style using North American flowers, leaves, trees, birds and animals. Purchased patterns may also be used. In my letter to you I will send dye formulas, a list of reference books and suggested motifs from Morris designs. Students may use any cut, backing, fabric or yarns. Join me for a class of fun, hooking, learning, music, story and history.

Course Information
"Have nothing in your home which you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful"

While most decorating trends have come and gone, William Morris’s lyrical vines have quietly and sinuously crept into our notion of the beautiful. His decorating philosophy can be summarized in one word “ simplicity”. We will be hook Morris designs and learn about his time and place through story and music. Students may create a design or purchase it. At student request, I will send templates, dye formulas and a list of resource books. A little knowledge of shading will be helpful, however we will be hooking only 4 or 5 values of each beautiful hue. Any cut may be used determined by the intricacy of the design and the weave of the backing.
